Arcangela Soave left Sant’ Elia for the New World with her parents; leaving her younger sister, Angelina in the care of her married brother, Carlo Soave. Angelina would later immigrate to Canada and settle in Fort William. Arcangela worked as a young adult in New York and married John LaRosa. They moved to Pennsylvania and raised their two daughters Angela and Josephine. Arcangela and her daughters eventually relocated in Boston’s North End.
When Giuseppantonio Iantosca and his wife, Mariantonia Rappa, arrived as well as their children at Ellis Island confusion ensued. At Ellis Island they would be asked their names and they would be written down as the worker heard them.
Many of the immigrant’s accents were very difficult to understand. Some were asked how to spell their names while others weren’t. It was because of this that the mistake in our family’s name occurred. The Iantosca children went through the Ellis Island interview seemingly uneventful. It wasn’t until later when James needed his legal documents that he realized that Ellis Island had given him the name of "James Yantosca". His brothers went by the name of Iantosca until sometime after 1910 when they changed their name to Antosca.
The Antosca/ Iantosca /Yantosca family settled in the Boston, Massachusetts area. They came to America with thirty dollars according to the Ellis Island interview on the ship’s manifest. Vincenzo Iantosca also noted in his interview that he had been to America for four years between 1894 and 1898. You can also see that there was a mistake on the ship written to typed manifest as to Vincenzo and his daughter Caterina’s last name. It was hand written correctly however could have been difficult to read the correct spelling. When the ship’s interview was put to type Iantosca turned into Iandono. You can see this in the documents included in the end of this site.
